The Lotus Painting is an original, by my mother, Elaine Lewis.

For me, sewing is a meditation. I am calmed by the weight and feel,  the color and texture, of fabric. Pure white, finely woven, hankerchief linen, edged in lace filigree, or dragon-red silk brocade, or perhaps bright blue and gold ships, sailing across a sturdy cotton, perfect for a three year-old boy's overalls.
I experience a deep sense of worth and purpose when I can fashion a finished product, a dress, a pillow case, or a child's night gown, from a raw piece of fabric. I feel connected to the people that worked the fabric and to the person for whom I am sewing.
A neat, evenly stitched seam, a skirt, falling straight and true, and I am reminded that I have the ability, in my own small way, to add beauty, caring, and creativity to this world.
